Hungry for some additional reading on the CPD? Check out these titles.

In the course of penning On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department, author Daniel P. Smith immersed himself in Chicago Police literature and offers the following reads for additional insight on the Chicago Police, its history and its people:

Armed and Dangerous: Memoirs of a Chicago Policewoman by Gina Gallo—a former Chicago officer, Gallo discusses her time on the street and the challenges facing Chicago’s cops, particularly female officers. “Truthful, sincere, and gritty,” says Smith.

Battleground Chicago: The Police and the 1968 Democratic National Convention by Frank Kusch—Smith describes Battleground Chicago as a “stunning, engaging read.” Kusch revisits 1968 Chicago and provides a detailed look at the tumultuous DNC as observed through the eyes of the city’s police officers.

To Serve and Collect: Chicago Politics and Police Corruption from the Lager Beer Riot to the Summerdale Scandal by Richard Lindberg—an absolutely thorough study of CPD graft and, even more, the roots of such corruption.

On the Job author Daniel P. Smith appears on History Channel show examining 1968 Democratic National Convention

Journalist, author, and budding Chicago historian Daniel P. Smith recently appeared on the History Channel's "Our Generation" program and its profile of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, one of the city's most historic events.

On the program, which included interviews with TV journalist Bill Kurtis and political science professor Dr. Paul Green as well as leading activists from the era, Smith discussed the legacy of the '68 DNC as it relates to police department response amid large demonstrations. Smith noted that police departments across the country frequently employ a containment approach rather than the dispersal approach utilized by the CPD in 1968 under the direction of then-Mayor Richard Daley.

The program also featured retired Chicago police officer and current Chicago fireman John O'Shea, whom Smith features in On the Job discussing both his role in the 1968 DNC as well as the department's evolution in the subsequent three decades.

On the Job is presently slated for a mid-September release from Lake Claremont Press.

"In a cop's world, the one truth is making it through your tour of duty alive—everything else is just a matter of interpretation. Armed only with an unflinching eye, Danny Smith invades that world to discover the truths, examine the shadows, and interpret the culture of those who hold the line. A must-read for anyone interested in the real story behind the blue."

Chicago Crime Writer Calls On the Job "both inspiring and tragic"

Chicago historian and crime writer Richard Lindberg, author of To Serve and Collect: Chicago Politics and Police Corruption from the Lager Beer Riot to the Summerdale Scandal, 1855-1960, had the following praise for the upcoming release of On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department by Daniel P. Smith:

"Told with sensitivity and candor, On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department is both inspiring and tragic. The story of everyday police officers serving on the front lines reveals the human side of 'the job.' Mr. Smith has weaved a fine narrative on the inner workings of a secret, oath-bound brotherhood, the impact of this 'job' upon their personal lives, and what it really means to be one of “Chicago's Finest.”

Crime author and former detective Lee Lofland sends advance praise

Lee Lofland, a leading crime and mystery writer and author of The Book of Police Procedure and Investigation as well as a former detective himself, volunteered these kind comments on behalf of Daniel P. Smith's upcoming release, On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department:

"Turn off 'CSI' and see what police work is really about. Daniel Smith has successfully opened the door to the private entrance of the Chicago Police Department. On the Job is an emotional and heartfelt journey inside one of America’s oldest and most respected police departments. This story is one that only a member of the family could tell."

Former Chicago Alderman Dick Simpson offers advance praise for On the Job

Dick Simpson, a former Chicago Alderman and now head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, had this early praise for On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department.

"On the Job tells the real story of Chicago Police. Chicago is like a small town in which Smith, because of his own background and credentials, was able to get cops to share their stories, which are too little told. Here is an honest dialogue which those of us who care about this city and others are privileged to read. On the Job fills an important gap in our oral history as a city and as a people."
