On the Job goes to second printing

On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department, the most complete book on the culture of one of the world's most legendary law enforcement units, recently went to a second printing, said the book's publisher, Chicago-based Lake Claremont Press. The second printing is slated to arrive on April 9.

"I'm thrilled that the book has resonated with so many readers and had a successful early run," On the Job Daniel P. Smith said. "The book's success is a testament to the officers who shared their sincere stories and allowed me to communicate them to readers."

Since On the Job's release in 2008, Smith has spoken at over 60 venues, including libraries, community centers, police groups, and more in four states, becoming a speaker noted for his high energy and story-filled presentation. The Chicago-based author, an award-winning journalist, has also appeared on numerous media outlets discussing elements of On the Job, including The History Channel, NPR, WGN-TV, WGN Radio, and Fox News.

Artist Lindsay Olson comments on Indian Prairie Library presentation

A great friend of On the Job, Oak Park-based artist Lindsay Olson has created a series of drawings around the theme "Tools of the Trade: A Citizen's View of Law Enforcement" (click to view samples of Olson's work).

In June, Olson's work, in part inspired by On the Job's content, will be displayed at the Oak Park Public Library. On January 6, Olson and her husband, Craig, attended author Daniel P. Smith's presentation at the Indian Prairie Library in Darien, IL, where she shared her work with the author.

Of Olson's project, Smith said: "Lindsay's project is as ambitious as it is heartfelt and sincere. It urges reflection on the role of police officers and the situations they so often face. Beautiful in color and texture, Lindsay's work is a credit to her artistry and dedication to interpreting the human experience, particularly that of police officers."

Prestigious Society of Midland of Midland Authors welcomes Daniel P. Smith

The Society of Midland Authors, a nearly 100-year old organization whose membership has included most of the Midwest's most celebrated authors (such as Jane Addams, Carl Sandburg, and Clarence Darrow), recently welcomed On the Job author Daniel P. Smith into its ranks. Smith joins an accomplished lists of current members, including Scott Turow, Dominic A. Pacyga, Rick Kogan, and Stuart Dybek.

Artist Lindsay Olson captures essence of On the Job

Chicago-based artist Lindsay Olson, the artist-in-residence at the Oak Park Police Department, has been working to produce a series of drawings inspired by On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department. Her first work in the "Tools of the Trade: A Citizen's View of Law Enforcement" series incorporates the list of 911 calls for the 11th District that author Daniel P. Smith weaved into the text. Lindsay discusses the book and the inspiration it gave her artwork at her Tools of the Trade blog.

Lindsay's full line of work is slated to be on display at the Oak Park Public Library in June 2010.

Wisconsin groups welcome On the Job author

Author Daniel P. Smith made the trek to Green Bay, Wisconsin to speak to a number of Citizen Police Academy groups about his work and research in completing On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department. Despite the author's allegiance to the Chicago Bears in the shadow of the Green Bay Packers' Lambeau Field, the exciting event showcased the universal nature of On the Job and the book's ability to transcend longstanding divisions and perceived differences in the hopes of inspiring empathy for law enforcement officers in and out of Chicago.
